UNITER, the Romanian Association of Theatre Artists, is a professional, apolitical, non-governmental, and non-profit organisation formed by theatre industry artists. Its foundingprinciples include freedom of expression, creation, and association, autonomy, and the right toexpress oneself within national and international culture.
UNITER defends the common interests of theatre professionals. Since its foundation in 1990, it has hosted the Romanian National Centre for the International Theatre Institute and celebrates World Theatre Day and International Dance Day annually. UNITER plays an active role in supporting and developing Romanian theatre. The UNITER Awards Gala, a significant program of the Romanian Association of Theatre Artists, is a competitive event with a structured nomination process, yearly organisation, flamboyant spectacle, foreign guests, live national TV broadcast, and highratings. It serves as a major analysis of theatrical life in Romania, offering a fresh critique of the theatrical phenomenon and new means of expression in theatrical art.
The “HOP” Young Actor’sGala, part of UNITER’s efforts, aims to rejuvenate Romanian theatrical life by providing astimulating framework for young professional performers, offering them visibility andrecognition. It is the most prominent Romanian program dedicated to young professional performers, featuring an annual contest at the end of summer. The House of Artists Program in Romania provides unique social services to artists facing difficulties due to old age, poverty, or poor health.
It aims to promptly address beneficiaries’ needs while creating a framework for social assistance and moral support. The program has a professional structure with specialised tools, human resources, communication and collaboration systems, skills, knowledge, and adaptable values. These values include respect for specific beneficiaries’ values, compassion, equal opportunities, respect for the choice to seek help, personalised services, a family atmosphere, privacy, confidentiality, diplomacy, and professionalism. The program is closely affiliated with UNITER. With over 1800 members, UNITER serves as a major source of specialised information, contributing to a dynamic and diverse strategy that establishes the organisation as a national representation centre for Romanian theatre.
